Forecasts: Grouse Hunting Predicted to be Above Normal in Certain Areas

clip_image001 It always seems the most inaccessible area’s hold the most grouse. When you’re out deer or elk hunting you can hear the drumming. Walking along a clearing a grouse busts up from under your feet to fly into the nearest tree and blends right in to the foliage. The grouse season in Washington runs from September 1 to December 31, 2011 the daily bag limit is 4 of any allowed species and the possession limit is 12 for any allowed species. Forecasts: Fishing is good on the lower river

The pink salmon have returned to the Puyallup River System in record numbers. Steve Thiesfeld, the department’s Puget Sound recreational salmon manager, said “The South Sound pink forecast is about 1 million fish, and I would think most of that would be the Puyallup,”

While the humpies have returned is in record numbers, so have the fisherman. The average drift on the Puyallup looks like a combat fishing zone reminiscent of the Kenai River in Alaska and its only September 1st. The bulk of the pink run is expected to be in the river from early September to about the third week in September. Fickering up and down, a sudden rise, then an immediate three foot drop, no wonder the average hunter shoots 3 doves for every box of shells. Mourning Dove hunting kicks off the migratory bird season in Washington State, opening September 1st through September 30, 2011. The daily bag limit is 10 and the possession limit is 20 doves again this year. Traditional gauge shotguns work well, 12-16-20 using 7 1/2 or 8 shot. Remember some State lands require the use of non-toxic shot. See the Washington Department of Game regulations for the area you are hunting in. All Pheasant release sites in 2011 require the hunter to only have in possession  non-toxic shot both in shot shell and loose shot form. Read the rest of this entry »

OLYMPIA – The Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission approved 2011-12 waterfowl hunting seasons that are similar to those adopted last year during a meeting Aug. 5-6. Under the waterfowl hunting package, the statewide duck hunting season will be open from Oct. 15-19 and from Oct. 22-Jan. 29. A special youth hunting weekend also is scheduled for Sept. 24-25. OLYMPIA – Starting Sept. 1, the base cost of most Washington hunting and fishing licenses will increase. This is the first general recreational license fee increase in more than a decade. The 2011 Legislature approved the new fees to help meet rising costs and a shortfall in revenue for managing hunting, fishing and the fish and wildlife populations that are the focus of those activities.
